Osborne Family

The Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia borders Maryland and Virginia. The first European settlers started arriving about 1730.

also spelled Osbourn and Osbourne.

William Osborne was born in 1745 in Pennsylvania. He was the son of David and Katy Osborne.

He married Mary Buckles. Mary was the daughter of Robert Buckles

David Osborne (1769, married Sarah Taylor),
Ann Osborne (1770),
Catherine Osborne (1773, married John Taylor),
Margaret Osborne (1775 married Williamson),
Mary Osborne (1778, married Melvin),
Sarah Osborne (1781, married Lafferty) and
Elizabeth Osborne (1782, married Melvin).

William was listed on the rent roll of Berkeley County with 221 acres.

William died in what is now West Virginia on February 20, 1825.

Rent rolls were lists of landowners showing whether they had paid their annual quit-rents to the Crown. A quick-rent was a feudal remnant and was paid by a freeholder in lieu of services that might otherwise have been required.

Slavery is an immoral system of forced labor where people are treated as property to be bought and sold. It was legal in the American Colonies and the United States until the Civil War.

I William Osbourn of the county of Jefferson and State of Virginia devise give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary the plantation or tract of land, I now live on in Jefferson County during her natural life

unto my wife, the following negro slaves to wit: Daniel, Amy, Eliza generally called Lizza Harry, also Joe, David Susan and Jacob children of Elisha also Nancy child of Amy

unto my son David the plantation or tract of land on which I now live with appurtenances after my wife's death also my half of the tract of land in Jefferson County where he now lives, which was purchased by myself and my brohter David in Partnership, from Selser.

I hereby ratify and confirm the division of said land tract as made between my brother and myself by John Davenport one hundred and fifty pounds to be divided into six parts and each part to be paid in the annual payments without interest as follows, to wit,

one part to my daughter Margaret Williamson

one part to my daughter Mary Melvin,

one part to my daughter, Sarah Lafferty,

one part to the children of my deceased daughter Elizabeth Melvin

one part to the five daughters of my deceased daughter Catherine Taylor and

the sixth part to my son David Osbourn, in trust for the sold and separate use of my daughter Ann Buckels,

unto my granddaughter Margaret Osbourn daughter of my son David Osbourn one bed and bedding a case of drawers and a woman's saddle to her and her heirs forever

It is my desire that my son in law John Taylor shall have my negro.

I give and bequeath to the children of my deceased daughter Elizabeth Melvin my negro girl Becky to them and their heirs

all the rest and residue of my estate to be divided into six parts to my daughter Margaret Williamson

West Virginia is located in the Appalachians and was originally part of Virginia. The capital and largest city is Charleston. It became a state during the Civil War and was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863.
